Alagna 2020

An SCGB guided week… and boy do we need the guides this week. Vis was down below 50m offpiste, with Boris nearby dissapearing entirely at one point.

However, the highlight was lunch at the Grand Halte… a small but perfectly formed menu, and a wine list that deserves a return visit.


Windy. And then some. Shutters blowing in the wind, and small avalanches visible from the closed lift station.


With 15c in the village and a promise of climbing, those not already equipped hire touring skis and skins, and we take the bus to Merle. A little dry on the way up though….

Not so many lifts, but a view that more than made up for the bus ride….


The offpiste was not particlarly pleasant, but at least we could see what we were doing….

After a long discussion with piste security, Boris established the best restaurant for lunch….

Menu… home made cheese & meat platters of various sorts of lard and salami, wine… and then polenta, then cheese polenta, then pork and gravy, then lamb and gravy…. and the home made wine kept coming…

dessert arrived in a haze of ethanol infused sugar cubes… an italian mountain delicacy we’d first encountered in Sauzy…

post lunch ski was limited to heading for the lift to download…. first up, then down…

20 minutes to download, time to chill and enjoy the scenery, before the hectic bus ride back to Alagna. Time for a quick one in the guides bar, and a little reflection during the short walk back to the hotel…
